Are you doing cool stuff? If so, you need to communicate how cool it is, with demo apps, exciting examples, articles, talks, and seminars. I love to bring the best new technologies into the public eye. I'm especially a fan of innovative programming tools and mobility software (Tablet PC, SmartPhone, and .NET Compact Framework). Here's an article from Sun that describes a working group that achieved more transparency. The way that Java evolves (the JCP: nice in theory, clumsy in practice) is one of that platform's biggest problems. The article is a bit of a puff piece, but at least it acknowledges that major problems exist with the JCP and supports the practices of a working group that avoided them.
