Shareware authors: Don’t embed your password in your code

So I decided to register a piece of shareware, but when I went to the publisher’s site, their domain had expired. Well, thinks I, I reckon that’s a situation for which “cracking” the protection is reasonable. So I open the assembly in Reflector and…

So this is what I want to tell the shareware authors of the world: don’t put your machine name in the code as a special debugging case and, really, really don’t put the IP address, username, and password of your host in a utility function.

Tufte’s Newest Book Available on Amazon

Edward Tufte’s new book, Beautiful Evidence, is now available on Amazon. As The Elements of Style is to writing The Visual Display of Quantitative Information is to visual design. I don’t think that Tufte has ever quite reached that level again, but that’s a testament to TVDoQI, not a damning of his other work, almost all of which has been worthwhile (The Cognitive Style of Power Point? Meh).
