5 Predictions For The Next Decade of Software Development

My most recent column for SD Times lists 5 predictions for the next decade of software development.

  1. Here is my list. A small list of things that ain’t gonna change, and a small amount of progress.

    1. Women will continue to be a minority among programmers (but will make up half of the non-developer portion of the IT staff). This will continue to be much lamented, but no one will continue to have an answer on how to fix it.
    2. Functional languages will flourish and better mix with OO languages. But will be better from the experience.
    3. Cell Phones/Mobile device are the new PC. As soon as you can connect a keyboard/monitor to a cell phone the transition will be complete.
    4. C++ will continue its long (very) slow decline. Unfortunately, no viable native compiler will replace it.
    6. Management will continue to expect 9 months of work in one month.
